On motorways and fast dual carriageways your safety comes before the tyre. We don’t change tyres on a live motorway hard shoulder or in a live lane. Here is what to do first:
- Hard shoulder: pull as far left as you can, hazards on, and get out on the side away from traffic. Wait behind the safety barrier and call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Don’t try to change the wheel yourself.
- Smart motorway with no hard shoulder: get to an emergency area if you can. If you are stuck in a live lane, keep your seatbelt on, hazards on, and call 999.
- If you feel unsafe or anyone is hurt: call 999 straight away.
Once you are somewhere safe, such as motorway services, a car park or side road off the next junction, or wherever recovery has dropped the car, call 07466 610232 and we come to you there. With a flat, carry on slowly to the next exit, lay-by or side road if you can do so safely; if not, stop as far left as possible, hazards on, get behind the barrier and call 999.
