On the A406 right now? If you're in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on, put your hazards on and call 999. Once you're somewhere safe (a slip road, side road, lay-by or car park), call 07466 610232 or WhatsApp a location pin to 07983 304240. Our base is beside the North Circular at 189C Brent Crescent, Park Royal NW10 7XR, and we aim to arrive in 15–30 minutes.
The A406 North Circular between Hanger Lane and Neasden is one of the busiest stretches of road in North West London. It carries lorries, vans and commuters past Park Royal, Stonebridge Park, IKEA/Brent Park and on towards Staples Corner. With stop-start traffic, junction debris and potholed nearside lanes, it's where a lot of the flat tyres we deal with begin.
This guide covers what to do if a tyre deflates on this stretch, how to get to safety, what information helps a mobile fitter reach you fastest, and what happens when we arrive. Our yard is right next to the North Circular in Park Royal, so we get these calls every week.
1. Recognise it early: the signs of a failing tyre on the A406
- TPMS warning light (a horseshoe shape with an exclamation mark) comes on while you're driving.
- The car pulls to one side or the steering feels heavy or vague at 30–40 mph.
- A rhythmic thumping or flapping noise that gets faster as you speed up.
- A sudden bang followed by the car dipping on one corner, usually a blowout or a big sidewall cut.
A slow puncture gives you time. A blowout doesn't. Either way, the aim is the same: slow down gradually, don't brake hard, and get off the main carriageway if you can do it safely.
2. Getting safe: slip roads, side roads and live lanes
The North Circular around Park Royal and Neasden is an urban dual carriageway, and for most of this stretch there's no hard shoulder. That changes what you should do compared with a motorway breakdown:
- Hazards on straight away and ease off the accelerator.
- Leave at the next junction if the car is still driveable at low speed. A few hundred metres on a deflating tyre usually costs less than stopping in a live lane. Good places to pull in near Park Royal include side roads off the Hanger Lane gyratory exits, Coronation Road and Brentfield by Stonebridge Park. Further east there are the Brent Park retail car parks and Neasden Lane.
- If you can't get off, stop as far left as possible, away from bends and junction mouths.
- Get out only if it's safe: use the passenger side and stand behind a barrier or on the verge, well away from traffic. If you can't safely get out, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999.
- Don't try to change a wheel in a live lane. A roadside jack on the edge of a 40 mph dual carriageway is a serious risk. Leave it to the emergency services, or to us once you're in a safe place.
Much of the A406 is a TfL red route. Stopping is allowed for a genuine breakdown, but moving off the main road as soon as it's safe keeps you, and the fitter who comes to help, out of harm's way.
3. What to tell the fitter (so we find you first time)
- A WhatsApp location pin or what3words. "North Circular near IKEA" can mean either carriageway.
- Direction of travel: eastbound towards Neasden/Staples Corner or westbound towards Hanger Lane.
- The tyre size from the sidewall (e.g. 205/55 R16 91V), or a clear photo of it.
- Whether you have a locking wheel nut key. If it's lost, say so and we'll bring extraction tools.
- Whether the car is a van or has run-flat tyres, since both change what we need to bring.
4. How fast a mobile fitter reaches you on this stretch
We're based at Brent Crescent, Park Royal, right beside the North Circular, and that's why this stretch is a strength for us. As a guide:
- Hanger Lane / Park Royal / Alperton side: often the quickest jobs of the day.
- Stonebridge Park (Harrow Road junction): a short run up the A406.
- Brent Park, IKEA Wembley and Neasden: around 3 miles; we aim for 15–30 minutes.
- Towards Staples Corner: depends on traffic; we'll give you a live ETA on the call.
Rush hour, stadium event days and roadworks can add time. We tell you honestly before we set off, and if we can't beat the queue we'll say so.
5. What happens when we arrive: repair or replace?
We make the area safe, then take the wheel off and inspect the tyre inside and out. Small punctures in the central tread may be repairable to BS AU 159. Sidewall cuts, damage near the shoulder, and tyres that have been driven flat at speed usually need replacing, which we do on the spot from van stock in common sizes. More on the rules in our BS AU 159 roadside puncture guide. If you have no spare at all, see what to do with no spare wheel.
6. Common A406 causes we see around NW10
- Construction debris: screws and nails from Park Royal and Old Oak sites, carried onto the carriageway.
- Kerb strikes in the tight junction layouts near Hanger Lane and the Harrow Road.
- Potholes and broken edges in nearside lanes after wet winters.
- Under-inflation that builds up heat over a long crawl. It's worth a pressure check if your TPMS light keeps coming on.

FAQs
Is there a hard shoulder on the A406 near Park Royal and Neasden?
For most of this stretch, no. It's an urban dual carriageway. Leave at the next junction if the car can still be driven slowly and safely. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay in the car with your seatbelt on and call 999.
How quickly can a mobile tyre fitter reach me on the North Circular?
Our base is beside the A406 at 189C Brent Crescent, Park Royal NW10 7XR. We aim for 15–30 minutes to the Hanger Lane, Stonebridge Park, Brent Park and Neasden stretch, and give you a live ETA on the call.
Should I change the wheel myself on the A406?
Not in a live lane. Get to a slip road, side road or car park first. If the car can't be moved safely, call 999 and let the emergency services manage the scene before any tyre work is done.
Can a puncture from the North Circular be repaired?
Often, if it's a small injury in the central tread and the tyre wasn't driven flat. We inspect it to BS AU 159 and replace the tyre on the spot if a repair isn't safe.
What should I send you on WhatsApp?
A live location pin, your direction of travel, the tyre size from the sidewall, and whether you have the locking wheel nut key. WhatsApp 07983 304240.
